CHAPTER

SEVENTEEN

The next morning, Ninsun lead the way north east along a valley between two ridgelines that had a lot of low hills in between. I opted to leave the Canoe with Ulker and the Garrison since Rowena wanted us on a ‘Training Hike’ to toughen the two of us up a little.

I decided to keep the leather and steel plate chest piece that I’d set up as a flying harness. A piece from the pile was a ‘Skirt’ of steel plates encased in leather that were meant to protect the groin and upper thighs. It did a fair job of concealing the groin straps, so I brought it along for when we wanted to waltz into Human territory acting like we belonged there.

A ‘Floating Shield’ idea got stuck in my head, so I brought along a few large disks of steel to play with. Molded out of the armor confiscated from the Slavers, of course.

After three days of travel, we climbed a steep mountain pass, pausing for a bit of lunch at a spot with a view of the valley below. The valley we were heading toward had a stone walled keep attached to the mountain north of us and a huge cleared area that was nothing but grasslands for miles. From the small buildings spread out amongst the tall grass, I figured this area might have been a farming community at one time. So I asked Ninsun about it.

“You guessed right. The farmers here were evacuated west.” She confirmed with a nod.

“To get them away from the Slavers?” I asked.

“They are honorless scum. Any underhanded trick, any devious trap, any way possible to steal our people, they do it. Since they developed an enchanted device that makes them hard to scent track, it is very difficult to completely keep them out. If you really do manage to deal with them, the Tribes will be forever in your debt.” Ninsun said.

“We’ll come up with something.” I said.

‘They said the Slavers had invisibility devices. The new device makes it so they can’t be scented either? That only leaves sound. Stealthy walking probably handles that too. Maybe if I move something like a cloud of iron particles around I could find them that way? The other part of that being, would I find one only for two others to sneak up on me with Collars when I was concentrating on the first? Damn… Wait! I got it!’

“Ninsun? Do the Slaver’s wearing that Invisibility Device usually carry Collars on them? Or do they just carry a club to knock people unconscious?” I asked.

“All of that. They have clubs enchanted with lightning magic to stun people, usually a handful of Collars each and a dagger for use if necessary. At least that’s been the usual for the ones we manage to catch.” She replied.

“Hmm…” I pondered that for a moment, “Perhaps I might could use Metal Sense to find the little bastards.”

“Wouldn’t Invisibility mess with that?” Rowena asked.

“It might not. After all, I can sense metal stuff behind me just fine.
